Community Legal Services of Philadelphia has launched a new podcast entitled How Is That Legal?.
Community Legal Services often find themselves asking, "How in the world could this possibly be legal?" as they fight alongside their clients whose families have been torn apart by the child welfare system. For example, did you know that one in three children in foster care could have remained safely at home if their parents had adequate housing?
In the very first episode of the How Is That Legal podcast, Professor Dorothy Roberts shares why she believes the child welfare system is better described as the family policing system.
You can download the first episode now to learn more about:
- The role of slavery in framing the Black mother
- How the Adoption and Safe Families Act was designed to tear Black families apart
- Why Professor Roberts believes that abolition is the only way to keep children safe
Dorothy Roberts (@DorothyERoberts) is the George A. Weiss University Professor of Law and Sociology, the Raymond Pace and Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander Professor of Civil Rights, and a professor of Africana Studies at the University of Pennsylvania.
