Student Loan Borrowers Assistance

The National Consumer Law Center offers this online resource center which provides easily understandable information for borrowers and advocates who represent them.

Big changes are coming to the student loan system. A new law passed by Congress and signed by President Trump on July 4, 2025, includes major changes to student loan repayment plans and other kinds of student loan help. These changes will go into effect at different times over the next two years. There are key deadlines coming up soon for borrowers who don’t want to miss out on relief before the new changes take effect. 

In addition to this new law, two court decisions have temporarily blocked parts of the SAVE Plan from taking effect. These court cases have also impacted borrowers’ rights to other benefits under some of the other repayment plans. It is also possible that the Department of Education may announce additional changes to the student loan system in the coming weeks and months, so it is critical to stay up to date on the latest news. Student Loan Help Video Series

Student loan experts at the National Consumer Law Center’s (NCLC) Student Loan Borrower Assistance Project have created a series of help videos designed to explain borrowers’ repayment options as rapid changes in policy and funding create confusion. The videos, produced with support from the California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation, examine a wide range of student loan topics to help borrowers manage their student loans.

Federal Court Finder

Find a federal court location by location or court name, including appellate, district, bankruptcy, probation and pretrial office, or federal defender organization. Each District Court has its own local forms which are generally available on the Court website.

Closed School Discharge

Information from Federal Student Aid, an office of the U.S. Department of Education, about Closed School Discharges of your federal student loan. If your school closes while you’re enrolled or soon after you withdraw, you may be eligible for discharge of your federal student loan. Loan discharge is the removal of your obligation to repay your loan under certain circumstances.

Direct Loans

The William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan (Direct Loan) Program is a federal student loan program under which eligible students and parents borrow directly from the U.S. Department of Education at participating schools. Direct Subsidized Loans, Direct Unsubsidized Loans, Direct PLUS Loans, and Direct Consolidation Loans are types of Direct Loans.
